In recent years, compassionate care has become a focus (rightfully so) of much of the work being done in the ABA space. The PFA and SBT efforts that have garnered well-deserved attention and a strong empirical foundation appear to be the way forward such that our science leads with child-focused efforts, rather than those enacted “because it’s always been done this way”. Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) has deep historical and empirical roots and remains an opportunity for behavior analysts and related service providers a way to extend beyond traditional accounts of human language and cognition. To that end, the current talk aims to synthesize the progressive work being done in SBT with that of ACT, casting light on the shared therapeutic stances between the two approaches while offering a spectrum on which practitioners may view said approaches. We posit that an integration of ACT into the fold of SBT-led practices will extend clinical impact and make you, the clinician, a more dynamic practitioner with the child’s dignity and autonomy at the center of practice.
